NATO, the world’s most powerful military organization, on Wednesday appointed outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as its next Secretary General. Mark Rutte has been appointed Secretary General by NATO at a time when there is a war going on in Ukraine and this is a critical time for European security.
Outgoing Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte will take over as the 14th NATO Secretary General from Norway’s current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg from October 1. Current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has been the NATO Secretary General for the past 10 years. His term was extended from time to time amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
The new Mark Rutte is a staunch opponent of Russia(nato flag)
Mark Rutte has been a strong critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a staunch ally of Ukraine. From time to time, he has openly expressed his views on Russia’s aggressive attitude towards Ukraine. Rutte may face the challenge of maintaining the support of allies in Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, as well as preventing NATO from directly getting involved in a war with Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has praised future NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He said that Rutte is a principled and strong leader. He has demonstrated his decisiveness and foresight on many occasions in the past years. At the same time, when outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was made the 14th Secretary General of NATO, the Kremlin said that nothing would change with his appointment.
It is an honour to be appointed NATO Secretary General: Rutte
Mark Rutte said in a post on X that it is a great honor to be appointed the Secretary General of NATO. This alliance is and will remain the cornerstone of our collective security. Leading this organization is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. He said that I am grateful to all the allies for showing trust in me. I look forward to taking over this post with great enthusiasm in October as the successor of the current Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who has provided excellent leadership to NATO for the last 10 years and for whom I have always had great admiration.
